Compression Load Cell Solution for Concrete Prop Load Monitoring | TWS
Total Weighing Solutions were recently approached by a concrete frame contractor who needed a practical way to monitor the loads being taken by individual props during the concrete pour-to-cure process.
The contractor required a solution that was accurate, quick to use on site and cost-effective across multiple props. Following a successful trial, our proposed system was accepted and led to a further order for 40 additional units.
The Challenge: Monitoring Prop Loads During Concrete Curing
During concrete frame construction, temporary props can be subject to varying loads as the structure is poured and cures. Understanding the load being applied to each prop can help contractors make informed decisions on site and improve visibility during critical stages of the build.
The customer needed a system that could:
- Measure the applied load on individual props
- Provide readings in kilonewtons
- Be simple for site teams to operate
- Avoid unnecessary complexity or excessive equipment costs
- Allow a single indicator to be used across multiple load cells
Our Solution: Compression Load Cells for Individual Props
The solution was straightforward and effective: TWS supplied a single compression load cell with a suitable mount to sit underneath each prop.
Each compression load cell was carefully matched for output, allowing the customer to use one indicator and connect to the load cells one at a time. This enabled fast, direct readouts of the applied load in kilonewtons without requiring a dedicated indicator for every prop.
How the System Worked
The load monitoring arrangement was designed for practical site use. Each prop had its own compression load cell and mount, while the operator could connect a single indicator to each cell in sequence to obtain an instant load reading.
| Requirement | TWS Solution | Customer Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Monitor load on individual props | Compression load cell installed beneath each prop | Clear visibility of applied load at each point |
| Read loads in kilonewtons | Indicator configured to display applied force | Useful readings for construction and engineering teams |
| Minimise equipment cost | Matched load cell outputs allowed use of a single indicator | Reduced need for multiple displays or duplicated equipment |
| Keep the system simple | Connect to each cell individually for an instant readout | Fast, straightforward operation on site |
Why Matched Load Cell Output Was Important
A key part of the project was ensuring that each load cell was carefully matched for output. This allowed the customer to use a single indicator across the system, as requested, while still obtaining usable readings from each individual prop position.
This approach avoided unnecessary complexity and helped keep the system practical for a construction environment, where speed, robustness and ease of use are essential.
The Result: A Successful Trial and 40 Additional Units
The trial solution delivered exactly what the customer needed. By using compression load cells and a shared indicator, the contractor was able to monitor prop loads quickly and efficiently during the pour-to-cure process.
The system provided a significant time and cost saving for the customer, and the success of the trial resulted in a further order for 40 more units.
Applications for Compression Load Cell Systems
Compression load cells are widely used where force or load needs to be measured in a controlled and repeatable way. This type of solution may be suitable for a range of industrial, engineering and construction applications, including:
- Temporary works load monitoring
- Construction prop load measurement
- Structural testing and verification
- Force measurement during assembly or production
- Industrial load monitoring applications
- Custom weighing and measurement systems

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a compression load cell?
A compression load cell is a sensor designed to measure force or load applied in compression. In this application, the load cell was positioned beneath a construction prop to measure the load being transferred through it.
Can one indicator be used with multiple load cells?
In this project, the load cells were carefully matched for output so that the customer could connect a single indicator to each load cell one at a time. This helped reduce equipment cost while still allowing individual prop readings to be taken.
What units were used for the load readings?
The customer required readings in kilonewtons, which are commonly used for force measurement in construction and engineering applications.
Can TWS provide custom load monitoring systems?
Yes. TWS can discuss custom weighing and force measurement requirements and recommend practical solutions based on the application, environment and measurement needs.
